History of All Saints’ Maidstone, Kent.
Originally there was a Saxon church, dedicated to St Mary on the site of the present church. However, in 1395, the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Courtenay caused a new church to be built, this time with the dedication to St Mary and All Saints. Some time of the ensuing centuries, St Mary was dropped from the dedication - whether this was dropped officially or just via popular consent, I do not know, but all of the public documents show only the name All Saints. The new church was built as a collegiate church, with 24 canons. Like most churches, the chancel would have been built first, and this, at least was already consecrated by 1396 when William Courtenay died, as it is recorded that he was buried in the church before being exhumed and re-buried “by the feet of the Black Prince, in Canterbury Cathedral”. I have been given the 15th century as the date for the misericords, however, with the date of the chancel being confirmed, I must interpret this is either being very early 15th century or very late 14th century.
