History of St Mary’s church, Swinbrook, Oxfordshire.
St Mary’s was founded sometime around 1200 and is an odd mixture of Norman and early gothic (and possibly gaffer tape) architecture, for instance the arcade columns are Romanesque, whilst the arcade arches are gothic, worse still, the arcade is not perpendicular to the ground. In addition to this, the chancel arch is skew. Somehow the church is still standing!
The misericords date from the 15th century. As the northern misericord is in a single stall, it is unlikely that there were ever more than the five misericords that now exist. When you look at misericords, S-02 and S-03, can you honestly say that the carver was not having fun, or that he didn’t have someone specific in mind when he created that nose? The windows also appear to be of 15th century manufacture.
Perhaps the greatest treasure of St Mary’s are the two Fettiplace (great name, eh?) memorials dating each of which is triple decked, each deck having a figure lying at ease on their side. The first dates from 1613, whilst the second from 1686, which indicates that the Commonwealth didn’t overly affect the families attitueds.
In 1822, over a period of six weeks a strange, open sided bell tower was added, the buttresses of the tower form a peculiar arched frame to the west window.
St Mary’s does not appear, as of October 2010 to have it’s own website.
